Preanalytical issues related to blood sample mixing
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Homogeneity of sample achieved by adequate mixing of the blood sample is the key to the quality of analytical results. Immediate mixing of the sample upon blood collection insures that the anticoagulant in the specimen container has fully dissolved with the blood, thus maintaining not only the effective anticoagulant-to-blood ratio but also providing a specimen free from any blood clots. The process of mixing should be such as not to result in the alteration of the integrity of the sample, such as hemolysis, and thus affect the quality of results.

The Evaluation of Error Types and Turnaround Time of Preanalytical Phase in Biochemistry and Hematology Laboratories
Background& Objective: Each laboratory should determine the type of errors and turnaround time (TAT), especially in the preanalytical phase to report quality and timeliness of the test results. The current study aimed at investigating the common causes of preanalytical errors in biochemistry and hematology laboratories and evaluating the preanalytical ...
متن کاملEstimation of Preanalytical Uncertainty in Clinical Chemistry
Preanalytical uncertainty is attributable to variations in blood sample collection and sample handling before analysis. The aim of this study was to establish a modelling framework for estimating preanalytical uncertainty. There is a need for standardization on which uncertainty sources that should be included, and how the preanalytical uncertainty should be estimated. In Paper I, an uncertaint...
متن کاملPreanalytical phase – a continuous challenge for laboratory professionals
Preanalytical phase is the most vulnerable part of the total testing process and is considered to be among the greatest challenges to the laboratory professionals. However, preanalytical activities, management of unsuitable specimens and reporting policies are not fully standardized, nor harmonized worldwide. Several standards related to blood sampling and sample transportation and handling are...
متن کاملPreanalytical Nonconformity Management Regarding Primary Tube Mixing in Brazil
BACKGROUND The multifaceted clinical laboratory process is divided in three essential phases: the preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical phase. Problems emerging from the preanalytical phase are responsible for more than 60% of laboratory errors. This report is aimed at highlighting and discussing nonconformity (e.g., nonstandardized procedures) in primary blood tube mixing immediately af...
متن کاملThe knowledge and understanding of preanalytical phase among biomedicine students at the University of Zagreb.
INTRODUCTION The educational program for health care personnel is important for reducing preanalytical errors and improving quality of laboratory test results. The aim of our study was to assess the level of knowledge on preanalytical phase in population of biomedicine students through a cross-sectional survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS A survey was sent to students on penultimate and final year ...
